Indoor collegiate climbing gym
Location: Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester NY
100-year-old barn, climbing gym since the 90s
In the 80s, RIT renovated an old barn into a recreational climbing gym, making the Red Barn one of the oldest indoor collegiate climbing gyms. Today, it holds 5,000 square feet of climbingand it’s open to both students and the public, ages 18 and up. New climbs are set weekly to accommodate all skill levels from Beginner to Expert.
The Red Barn’s old age has built up 40 years of charm that are now its greatest strength. The Red Barn’s old wooden walls, spontaneous nature, laid-back community, and constant, welcoming chatter and chaos are what make it distinct.
Rumble 2025
Red Barn Brand Identity and Style Guide
After extensive consumer research and the creation of an original brand identity, I was hired as the Red Barn’s Social Media Manager, running end-to-end production of all video, graphic design, and illustration. I created and managed all visual assets of the Red Barn.
My Process
-

1. Sketch on Paper
I always start with paper, and pen or pencil, especially for a place like the barn where rough edges make a huge difference in the energy of the artwork.
-

2. Collaboration
The initial sketch was created during a meeting with the first Rumble’s Project Manager, PJ Martin. The 3D render above was created by Ben Franz as a visualization, and was later chopped up and incorporated in the final poster.
-

3. Digital Sketching, Editing, Layout
For a graphic design/information-heavy poster, working digitally allows me to resize, recolor, and plan negative space zones for type more easily. I also worked side-by-side with the previous year’s design for a visual consistency.
-

4. Color Comps and Shirt Mockups
Once the concept is in a good spot, I create loose sketches in a variety of colors and layouts to send to the Rumble team. Everyone votes on a winner, and the final design is created after.
